Project updates & information

Our name, Five Villages Community Garden, reflects our long term plan to build a garden in each of the five villages that make up our small coastal community. We're still in the very early stages of planning and building and we're working with lots of people to make things like access to public land happen. This projects page is where we will publish information on current and past projects.

If you have any questions or comments on any of our projects please feel free to get in touch.

Project 3 - Yulunga Reserve Communal Garden
Location: Yulunga Reserve, Manyana NSW
Status: Commenced March 2022
Creation of a communal garden at Yulunga Reserve has been the number one priority for FVCG since inception. With a successful grant application of $125,000 under the Commonwealth Black Summer Bushfire Grant Program and agreement with the Yulunga Reserve Management Committee on a suitable site within the Reserve, the project was officially commenced in March 2022.

The key element of the garden will be a fully enclosed garden structure of some 150 square metres containing raised garden beds.

Major project tasks include:
  • Community engagement on design options
  • Prepare detailed design drawings (See draft drawings in this section)
  • Obtain planning approval (Approval obtained 4/11/2022)
  • Secure a site licence from Shoalhaven Council (Licence executed on 1/11/2022)
  • Construct the garden (Scheduled to commence 14/11/2022)
  • Commission the garden

Project 2 - Yulunga Playground Verge Garden
Location: Yulunga Reserve, Manyana NSW

Status: Completed September 2021
Five Villages Community Garden assisted the Yulunga Reserve Management Committee to create a bird attracting native street verge garden adjacent to the existing children's playground. The garden bed was prepared using the no dig method utilising locally sourced cardboard, compost and seaweed.  Milton Rural Landcare Inc donated 40 indigenous native plants and these were supplemented with plants provided by the Reserve Management Committee.

This is a great example of community working together to improve and beautify underutilised public spaces in our villages.

Project 1 - RFS fire-resistant garden
Location: Cunjurong Point Rd, Cunjurong Point NSW

Status: Completed August 2021
The Manyana RFS fire-resistant demonstration garden was designed to help educate the local and fire-prone community about garden design that can help reduce fire risk. The reduction of fire fuel potential, buffered radiant heat impact and blocked ember attack on dwellings was a focus when designing and selecting species and materials for this garden. Using stone borders and seasoned reclaimed local hardwood for structures meant we could build attractive seating and arbours that were hard to burn. Seating structures also hug the ground to stop accumulation of leaf litter and embers underneath. A moisture holding mound was created using the 'lasagne garden' method which helps keep the ground cool, wet and ready to be a buffer between radiant heat from fire and a structure like a house.

This project was the first activity for FVCG and was predominantly built as part of a community 'Permablitz' event in April 2021. During this event over 40 community participants prepared the garden bed and undertook the plantings.  Following the community event the FVCG team completed work on the structures and finished up with a celebratory beer in August 2021. The FVCG team continues to monitor plantings and undertakes maintenance as required.
